From the Director's Desk

Welcome to the FIRST EDITION of the monthly Rolla Public Library newsletter.
Thanks for subscribing. We hope to be able to keep you informed about library announcements, events and updates in your email inbox on the first of every month. We plan on occasionally featuring library staff and patron recommendations, as well as providing articles on highlighted library resources and a brief monthly column showcasing some local history. This newsletter is a work in progress and constructive feedback is welcome.

Please tell your friends about the newsletter and direct them to sign up in person at the library or via our website (near the bottom of the homepage). An email address is required. We are excited to share even more with you, friends. Thank you for using your community library.

- Rebecca Buckley, Library Director

A special thank you to former employee and current collaborator Derek Zboran

FOCUS: Featured Library Staff

Meet Library Clerk Theresa Allison,

always a friendly smile in the stacks.

We are profiling our beloved staff member and library clerk Theresa Allison for our very first newsletter staff feature. Well, her last name begins with A, and she is very reliable and efficient for a tight deadline (ahem).

Theresa’s favorite part of her library job is having her hands on the books, whether this be packing and unpacking incoming and outgoing holds, shelving, shelf reading or mending damaged volumes (which is her superpower). She says, “I love discovering new books this way. My reading ‘bucket list’ is continually growing. I also enjoy chatting with patrons about books; some of the best books I’ve read have been recommended by patrons.”

On the job, Theresa is best known for her mending skills. She saves the library a lot of money by extending the life of a well-worn book and we know that she does this with love. Theresa says that she “loves giving new life to old books”. Some old books can’t even be replaced, like older large print titles. Off the job, she is also well known for her artistic talent, her bread-making skills, her love of cats and her contagious laugh.

Theresa has a dream that the library will one day have a mobile unit to serve nursing homes and home-bound patrons. We know that she wants to knit or crochet colorful curtains for a cheerful bookmobile.

The area of the library that most interests Theresa is the Arts and Crafts section (which is the 700s Dewey Decimal area). She was asked to recommend five items from this section. These items are:
1. “How to Paint Landscapes Quickly and Beautifully in Watercolor and Gouache”
by Nathan Fowkes – CALL # NF 751.4224 FOW
2. “Direct Watercolor” by Marc Taro Holmes – CALL # NF 751.422 HOL
3. “Modern Crochet Mandalas” by the Editors at Interweave – CALL # NF
746.434 MOD
4. “Poetic Crochet” by Sara Kay Hartmann – CALL# NF 746.434 HAR
5. “Magical Woodland Knits” by Claire Garland – CALL# NF 746.432 GAR

Theresa wishes more of the community knew about the many services and opportunities that the Rolla Public Library offers, like our thousands of loyal patrons do. She recommends our programs like Story Time and Summer Reading Program, our TechConnect lendable technology and our Missouri Evergreen Consortium, which connects us to millions of items beyond the walls of Rolla Public Library. She even says that “if you can’t find the book you are looking for on Evergreen, we can most likely find it through inter-library loan, which is multi-state. Or the library may purchase your request to add to the library collection!” Theresa is a walking commercial for the library!

She is also a beautiful person who is loved by her fellow library workers as well as so many in the community. She will always offer you a smile with every library item lent.

FOCUS: Featured Library Patron

Regular patron Greg Lux has a heart and mind

for literature and libraries!

Greg Lux is a very loyal Rolla Public Library user; he is extremely well-read, and we see him at least once or twice a week when he is picking up books for himself or his wife. What a guy! He sometimes even brings goodies for the library staff, but that is not the only reason why he was asked to be our first patron interviewee for the newsletter.

Greg has been using the Rolla Public Library since 2015 when he entered retirement. He has been reading voraciously ever since. He uses our library mostly for access to a wide variety of fantastic books, available locally or through the Missouri Evergreen Consortium. He regularly utilizes the EBSCO database available on our website, checks out “The New Yorker” magazine and visits us for the fellowship of our library staff members. Greg says, “In the 1944 French existentialist drama, ‘No Exit’ by philosopher/playwright Jean-Paul Sartre, a character answers the question as to the definition of ‘Hell’, with an especially famous phrase, ‘Hell is Other People!’ (‘L'enfer, c'est les autres!’).” He kindly exclaims, “This certainly doesn't apply to the RPL because the staff is always so helpful, friendly, iconoclastic, fiercely intelligent, and fun to be around!” Well, golly, that’s sweeter than the baked goods Greg regularly feeds us!

Greg’s dreams for the library include a building expansion and the inclusion of the database JSTOR, which includes access to academic journals, books and primary sources.

He has been recently enjoying the literature of Indian American essayist and novelist Salman Rushdie. Greg says, “Great lit, like his and others (Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Faulkner, Hemingway, and currently Marilynne Robinson, Percival Everett, Jenny Erpenbeck, et al), is lovable because it illuminates the Human Condition in some way(s) and its characterizations give insightful understanding of Human Nature, making the books timeless and universal! The greatness and value of these are not open to the uncertainty and ambiguity of the physicist's paradox of Schrodinger's Cat!”

You will likely see Greg often around the library and he is always willing to chat because just about everything interests him. He is very appreciated by us at the library for his kind words and he interests us with many eclectic book suggestions as well.

Greg, we are honored to serve as your connection to a world of literature and inspiration!

NEW Libby Titles

Rolla patrons get first dibs on these purchased titles. If you are on hold for one of these items, your wait will be much shorter now. Titles are chosen by number of Rolla patron holds placed. Enjoy! Learn more about Libby and our growing collection of ebooks and audiobooks here.
Rolla_Herald_Thu__Dec_6__1934_
Clipping is from "The Rolla Herald", December 6, 1934

"This is the answer to a long felt need in the community..."

On November 28, 1934, the Parent-Teachers' Association voted to organize and operate what would eventually become Rolla's municipal library.

The library was originally intended to serve younger patrons. Later it became a library for all ages.

Members of the PTA collected book donations from citizens. As stated in the Rolla Herald, donations "bring pleasure and inspiration to hundreds of Rolla children." And we know they still do!
